Attendees of the 35th Annual Red River Basin Land & Water International Summit Conference in Winnipeg had an opportunity to learn about the Red River Valley Water Supply Project (RRVWSP) in January. The co-sponsors of the project, Garrison Diversion Conservancy District (Garrison Diversion) and the Lake Agassiz Water Authority (LAWA) provided information about the RRVWSP at a booth. Duane DeKrey, Garrison Diversion General Manager, also presented on the RRVWSP at the international conference.
DeKrey covered the project’s history, need, progress, and plans through 2019. “We had a lot of good questions from the audience. One of the concerns we hear from Canadians is whether the water will be treated. Yes, it will. The water will be treated to meet permit requirements. We are currently looking at treatment options with our consultants,” says DeKrey.
Thirty-five communities and water systems have provided initial commitment to the project. The RRVWSP will provide a supplemental water supply to about 50 percent of North Dakota’s population, from the central area to the Red River Valley.
