Dave Carlsrud joined the Lake Agassiz Water Authority Board (LAWA) after becoming the Mayor of Valley City. The self-described “old Norwegian” came into office through a special election in 2016 without any political experience. However, he did have a strong desire to help the community of 6,300 residents in any way he could. Reelected in 2019, he plans to run for his position again in 2022.
“I consider it a privilege to be part of LAWA and to serve as Valley City’s Mayor,” says Mayor Carlsrud. “I really appreciate the LAWA Board members, Garrison Diversion Board and staff for making important decisions that are benefiting North Dakotans.” LAWA and Garrison Diversion are cosponsors of a project that will directly benefit about half of North Dakota’s population – the Red River Valley Water Supply Project (RRVWSP). The drought mitigation project will also protect the entire State’s economy in the event of a 10-year, 1930s style drought. That scenario would have a projected $32 billion impact on North Dakota. The RRVWSP, which is currently under construction, will provide an emergency and supplemental water supply to communities and rural water systems from central North Dakota to the Red River Valley.
“I think the Red River Valley Water Supply Project has to happen. I support the project because it will be good for North Dakota. It would be a major investment for Valley City and our participation depends on the cost. If we can afford to participate, it would be a wonderful insurance policy for our community,” he said.
Mayor Carlsrud and his wife, Sue, have been married 30 years after their careers with the North Dakota High School Activities Association (NDHSAA) brought them together. Sue and Dave worked there for 43 and 22 years respectively. “During our time with the North Dakota High School Activities Association, we were able to help kids realize their dreams through co-curricular activities. Working for the NDHSAA was very gratifying for both of us,” he says.
The Carlsruds have four children and five grandkids spread across the country. “We’re very grateful to have a healthy family,” says Mayor Carlsrud, as he and Sue prepare to celebrate the holidays. No doubt the residents of Valley City and LAWA Board are also thankful to have Mayor Carlsrud on the team.
